Jol Sacked – Goodbye Martin, and Thanks

I write this prior to the game against Getafe at the Lane tonight, as news has reached Copenhagen that tonight is to be the big man’s final game in charge. It is fitting that it is to be at White Hart Lane, and would be even more fitting if the board was to make the fans aware that it will be his final game, so he can receive the send off that he deserves.

Despite the shocking start to this season, a situation which apart from the first 2 games, the board of the PLC must surely accept the bulk of the responsibility for, let us not forget the incredible advances made under Martin’s reign at the Lane. Two consecutive 5th place finishes, and in one case just 90 food poisoned minutes away from the Champions League. The Quarter Finals of the UEFA cup, significant runs in both domestic competitions, and who can forget the electric atmosphere at the Lane as Spurs defeated Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea last season, or the belief in the crowd at half time vs Seville as the players emerged to chants of “We only need 4 goals”, and a 30 minute spell where even the East Stand were standing for a stirring rendition of the Spurs Song repetoire.

He leaves us in no disgrace, and should be allowed to walk out with his head held high, to a standing ovation from a capacity White Hart Lane. He has no hair and we don’t care, and hopefully the club will see to it that he gets the reception he deserves. Farewell Martin, and the best of luck for the future.

And so, for one final time, it’s “Martin Jol’s Blue and White Army”.

Interface design and Usability testing, or: How could Carling get a simple game so wrong?

This week in Game Design we have looked at interface design, playtesting and usability testing.

This evening I found myself at the Carling site (they’re giving away tickets for Spurs v Blackpool), and noticed they had a few mini-games, which I thought I’d give a go.

One of the games is shooting penalties against a wall. Simple concept right? Hard to screw up? Well they did it. If you want to try it yourself, click here

Yes, you have to click that thing in the bottom right, between every shot of the shootout. And of course your mouse is naturally in the goal area.

Surely one person testing would have noticed that?!
