RIP Nick Adenhart

As Nick Adenhart left the mound Wednesday night at Angel Stadium with a 3-0 lead and 6 shutout innings under his belt, 43’000 stood to applaud. Little did those in attendance know they were witnessing his final moments. Hours later, he was dead — killed in a car accident. Yesterday’s Angels game was postponed by commissioner Bud Selig as a mark of respect. All signs pointed to Adenhart having a promising future near the top of the Angels rotation, a future that we will never get to see. Condolences go out to his friends, family and colleagues.

RIP Nick.

So I'm sitting at home, working…

Today is February the 14th. Or FA Cup 5th round day. Or, some people tell me, Valentines day.

Luckily I have far too much work on currently to worry that I’m sitting at home tonight, writing page after page of my thesis and reading about Post-Phenomenology.

Well, that was the case, until I got around to watching today’s episode of Saturday Kitchen, when, as the opening screen, I was presented with this:

At least tomorrow the world will be back to normal.

Two jobs, now just need a bank account

January 19th, 2009 Darryl Woodford No comments

So today I had a successful interview for one job, doing web work and newsletters for one of the research schools at the University. The pay is listed as 150kr including holiday allowance, I guess I’ll figure out what that means given time!

Prior to the meeting I met with M to sort out some outstanding issues from Christmas, and found out I also got the TA job for a course this semester. This, as far as I can tell, pays 185kr/hr, and is for either 70 or 90 hours over the course of the semester.

Now, I’m told the Tax free allowance is ~4000kr, over which I’ll pay about 50%. I make that approximately 4000 + (6904/2) = 7452kr/month, or about 888 kr / week over rent, a liveable wage which will take the pressure off my other income source. Additionally on May 1 I should receive about 4089 kr in holiday allowance, if my Math is correct, which should about cover my trip to Cyprus.

Fingers crossed my math is correct!

Now, just to deal with the immense amount of bureaurocracy involved in getting a bank account to pay my salaries (that sounds good!) into! But that’s for tomorrow. I spent most of today building Ikea furniture, lugging it from floor to floor (along with a ton of pre-existing furniture) and other odd jobs in the department, unpaid I might add, so all I want to do now is sleep!

Enjoy this moment

January 18th, 2009 Darryl Woodford No comments

I should enjoy this moment, as it’s probably the one time this semester when I will be ahead of the game.

This weekend I prepared the presentation for my final examination, wrote my masters thesis proposal for the University administration board, and wrote the first draft of my PHD proposal which I’m sure will be subject to a number of redrafts, so I officially (for at least 8 hours) have no work outstanding to hang over me.

Tomorrow I have the meeting with the research group about the admin/web job, and also have to stop by M’s office to collect for some work over Christmas. Still hoping to get some teaching work this semester, but time will tell on that one. One thing I do know is I need some teaching work on my CV before I finish the PHD, and ITU may be problematic in that regard.

Now, if only my financial status was the same..
